Job-Seeking in Beauty? 5 Quick Tips to Update your LinkedIn Profile

Savvy job-seekers know that having a current LinkedIn profile is important for visibility to employers & recruiters. Think of it as your professional business card online; even if you’re not currently job-seeking, it’s a good idea to periodically spend just a few minutes keeping it current. Here are a few quick tips to make sure yours is polished and up to date:

  1. Make sure all key details are correct & aligned to your current resumé. This includes: your city/location, job titles, employers, dates. Significant differences between your LinkedIn profile and resume details only create question marks in the minds of potential employers – something you want to avoid.

  1. Ensure your profile photo reflects a great “you”. It doesn’t necessarily need to be an expensive, professionally-taken portrait (although if you already have one and you like it, great), but it should reflect: professional clothing, workplace-appropriate grooming, and a warm, approachable expression (e.g. smiling!).

  1. Use your Intro/Summary section to give a little insight into who you are. Avoid artificially talking about yourself in the third person, and at the same time, avoid using too many “I’s”. Use this area to briefly explain, to a prospective Beauty employer, who you are, what makes you professionally interesting, and what added value you might bring to their organisation.

  1. Start “following” Beauty-related organisations you’d be interested in working for. Since these organisations will then appear in your “interests” section, it not only signals to prospective employers that you have a genuine professional interest in the Beauty industry and/or their company, but it also brings their company updates – including, sometimes, their job postings – straight to your news feed and just a click or two away from potentially getting your foot in the door.

  1. Use Connection Requests to network with current and former colleagues. Especially if you already have Beauty industry contacts from a prior role, it’s a great way to stay on each others’ radar screens, even if they’ve moved on to other companies. Their likes, shares, and posts in your news feed just might also alert you to an interesting job – or another Beauty industry contact you’d like to connect with.
